Franklin Elementary School Garden
In an effort to brighten and beautify the yard alongside the school building, Mr. Maurice, the school principal, asked if gardens could be planted. Interested teachers in the second and fifth grades thought this would also make a wonderful area for studying such science topics as plant growth, math measurements and tending gardens for food. A student teacher, Melissa Tesauro, working with second grade students this spring, asked her colleagues at The Gap in Princeton if they would help in planting flowers and herbs. Mr. Maurice contacted a landscaper from the district to till the soil, Ms. Burroughs and Mr. Messersmith, science support friends from TCNJ, raked in top soil and compost, and Ms. Fannin, IT instructor, took pictures. Ms. Bennett’s third grade class planted beans in a third garden and monitored their growth. Due to the wonderful rainy season these last weeks of school, the flowers and herbs grew wonderfully well. It’s a small start; but shows that good ideas can take root and grow!
